The meeting will be at the 68 Youth & Community Centre on Monkton Road at 5:15pm. It has been arranged as part of a council scrutiny review into the future of the pool.

The review was setup following a request by Liberal Democrat councillors to re-consider Labour’s decision to cut the £250,000 annual subsidy given to Yearsley from 2016/17.

Monday’s meeting will ask residents and users for their views on the pool and will listen to ideas about how its future can be secured.

Before the public meeting, members of the cross-party review will go on a tour of the Yearsley facility.

Cllr Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat Group Leader who is chairing the Scrutiny Review, commented:

“This meeting is a chance for pool users and residents to have their say on the future of Yearsley. A petition against closure, set-up by the Yearsley Pool Action Group, was signed by 6,500 so we know how valued the pool is.

“Labour did not consult users or residents before they announced their funding cuts last year, so this public meeting is long overdue. We want to hear local views and hear what people want for their pool. There will also be an opportunity to put forward ideas on how we can secure Yearsley’s long-term future in light of the funding situation.

“As a committee we will have a number of visits and meetings to try to find the best way forward. I am determined to make this review an open process and I would urge users of the pool and local residents to get involved and attend on Monday.”

Details of the Yearsley Pool Ad Hoc Scrutiny Committee can be found here http://democracy.york.gov.uk/ieListMeetings.aspx?CId=863&Year=0. The cross-party review is looking at ways to reduce the subsidy given to Yearsley while securing its long-term future.
