Construction of a new zebra crossing and off-road cycle links to the south of the school will start from Monday 28 October for approximately two weeks. To enable this work to be carried out safely and quickly, there will be a road closure on Sunday 3 November

A key aim of the scheme, part of the wider School Safety Programme, is to facilitate and encourage walking and cycling on school journeys, reduce the number of cars on the network at key times, and promote sustainable travel habits at an early age.

As a direct result of the review into walking and cycling in the vicinity of Joseph Rowntree Secondary School, pupils who lived south of the school were found to have fewer direct facilities. To address this, the scheme has been developed to provide a raised zebra crossing where most pedestrians cross, and off-road cycle links to give less confident cyclists an alternative on this busy narrow road.

Part of the works will include constructing a raised speed table (raised area of road used as a traffic calming measure and crossing facility) on Haxby Road just south of the junction with Park Lodge. On the same day, the opportunity will also be taken to construct a second speed table just south of the A1237 roundabout as part of the Haxby to Clifton Moor cycle route works.
While the road is closed, diversion routes will be signed via A1237, Strensall Road and North Moor Road in Huntington, Huntington Road, Link Road and Hawthorne Terrace, New Earswick.
