City of York Council will be carrying out overnight works in the area surrounding the A59 in preparation for the new Poppleton Bar Park & Ride site.
The works will take place in two phases from Monday 31 March until Thursday 17 April and from Tuesday 6 May until Friday 23 May.
To allow the council to undertake overnight works temporary traffic signals or, in the second phase, overnight closures will be in place. The working hours will take place generally between 7pm until 6am, although some operations will be shorter than this.
The first phase of overnight works during March and April will include drainage and kerbing and installing traffic signs, lamp columns and tidying verges on the A1237 south of the A59.
Widening works will also take place on bus stop on the A59 West (opposite the Old Coach House) heading east towards Sandaig and Poppleton roundabout, which will include footway works on the corner of the A59 (outside the property known as Northfield)
The second phase of overnight works during May will require a closure of the A1237 to enable final surfacing works at Poppleton roundabout and along the A59.
All affected residents and traders have been sent advance notification about the works.
The road closure will be supervised at all times to prevent unauthorised access and access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption and inconvenience but everything reasonably possible will be done to keep this to a minimum. There will however be occasions, for example when surfacing, where we need to use rollers and pavers through the night.
The new Park&Ride site at Poppleton Bar is part of a programme to improve access into York city centre and enhance York’s Park & Ride network, which already provides over four-million journeys every year.
The scheme is replacing the Askham Bar Park&Ride site with a larger facility and will create a new site on the A59 near Poppleton. Both services will provide frequent 10-minute bus journeys in and out of the city centre. The new site at Poppleton Bar will have capacity for 600 vehicles, including disabled and family parking spaces, cycling and camper van facilities.
Highway improvement works are also being undertaken to ease access into the new facility. The A59/Station Road/Northfield Lane junction will be simplified using traffic lights and a mini roundabout.
Alterations to the A59 /A1237 roundabout will also be made to ease congestion and include the installation of a new pedestrian and cyclist underpass.
