Alcohol Awareness Week

City of York Council is supporting this year’s Alcohol Awareness Week which is taking place from 17 to 23 November with a theme of “Facing our alcohol problem; Taking back our health and high streets.”

The aim is to raise awareness of alcohol issues and the impact it can have on our health and communities.

The council is running awareness stands in the foyer of West Offices which will include information from Lifelife, Changing Lives and the anonymous fellowship AA. Members of the public are invited to visit the stands between 9am and 5pm during Alcohol Awareness Week.

The cost to the city’s health services due to alcohol misuse alone is estimated at £55 per adult resident1.

Julie Hotchkiss, Acting Director of Public Health for City of York Council said: “Many of us enjoy a drink, but nobody enjoys doing long term damage to their health. As Christmas parties approach, I hope Alcohol Awareness week will get York’s residents thinking and talking about their own drinking habits and how to ensure they’re not harming themselves or othe rs.”
