Council bids to prevent repetition of Christmas bins chaos

The York Council is distributing a leaflet to each household explaining how they plan to schedule waste collections over the Christmas period.

Last year the service deteriorated in to chaos during the same period.

This year some recycling collections are being cancelled. There will be no collections on New Years Day but there will be a “catch up” on the following Saturday.

The Council have issued the following advice.

A handy leaflet packed with money saving tips and suggestions has been published.

The leaflet, called ‘12 small changes for a festive Christmas’, suggests practical ways of managing money and budgeting in the run-up to Christmas and beyond.

It also lists contact details for a number of different organisations such as the National Debtline and The Money Advice Service, who can give help to residents who may need advice on financial matters.

Leaflets are now available to pick up from every library and Explore centre and from the Citizens Advice Bureau at West Offices. You can also download a copy from here

York’s First Day of Christmas – tomorrow

The festive season officially lights up in York with the First Day of Christmas, a celebration in St Helen’s Square to mark the start of the city’s season of goodwill, involving The Lord Mayor and special guests the York and Dishforth Military Wives Choir.

The St Helen’s Square tree is the focal point in a chain of lights across the city. It will be switched on by the Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of York Cllr Julie Gunnell at a ceremony on Thursday 14 November which completes the festoon of lights across the city.

The event starts at 6.30pm to the tune of favourite Christmas songs from the choir, followed by the official switch on at 6.45pm.

The Friends of York Minster have unveiled their 2013 Christmas cards.

Costing£4.00 for a pack of 10 cards, they can be purchased from the Friends Office (Tel: (01904) 557237).

They are also on sale in the Chapter House on Sunday mornings until 8th December.
