Chapman’s Pond closed to anglers.

Chapmans PondChapman’s Pond is closed to anglers for up to four weeks following Environment Agency advice.

The closure coincides with the start of the carp spawning season. Closing the pond reduces the stress to the fish during the spawning period and allows them to use more areas of the pond undisturbed. The action may also help prevent the high number of fish deaths that occurred at the pond last year.

It is common to close fishing ponds during spawning and most of the other nearby ponds, including the railway pond close during this period. Voluntary water bailiffs at Chapman’s Pond will help advise anglers of the closure and continue to monitor the site.

This will come as a relief to local residents who had been concerned that the rubbish had been left to accumulate for many weeks.

Dringhouses choir seeks new members

Tenants at one of City of York Council’s Sheltered Housing schemes, Honeysuckle House, are appealing for local residents to join them in song.

Honeysuckle House in Dringhouses

The tenants set up their own choir earlier this year, thanks to a grant from the Two Ridings Community Foundation Arts for Change Programme, and the Musical Connections Project. But they’re keen to encourage local residents to join them in their weekly choir sessions.

The sessions take place at Honeysuckle House, Herdsman Road, Dringhouses, each Wednesday morning between 9.45-11am.

Tenants really enjoy the sessions, with comments including: “The sessions wake me up in the morning.”, “Music brings us together and it is an opportunity for me to make friends.”, “I feel excited each week to come to the session”.

Anyone wanting to find out more about the choir can contact Emma on 07778 560632, visit the Musical Connections website –www.musicalconnections.org.uk – and email the team or search for Musical Connections on Facebook.

Thanks again. And fingers crossed it helps us get some more singers!

Choir members are asked to give a weekly donation of up to £3, to cover the full cost of running the choir.

Wains Road parking bays take shape

New parking bays are taking shape on Wains Road, which have been jointly funded by the Ward Committee and the Estate Improvement Grant.

The parking bays are being built outside the flats at the top end of Wains Road. The nature of the bend in the road has created parking difficulties at this spot, which the new bays will help to alleviate.

Unfortunately, some nearby grass verges have been badly damaged at the same time as the works have been done (pictured below). We will be asking that the contractors make good the damage that has been done (if vehicles are found to have been responsible).

The meeting on Tuesday 1st March at 7pm will be held at West Thorpe Methodist Church.

The main focus of the meeting will be to elect a new Chair and Secretary, to take over from the long-serving office holders who are standing down after many years’ sterling service.
