Liberal Democrats announce candidate line-up for Dringhouses & Woodthorpe

Local Liberal Democrats have selected the team of candidates who will contest the Dringhouses & Woodthorpe ward at May’s local elections.

Ann, Stephen and Ashley

Ann, Stephen and Ashley

Standing with Cllr Ann Reid, who has represented the ward in its various forms since 1986, will be Ashley Mason and Stephen Fenton, who hope to join Ann in representing the ward on City of York Council. Currently the ward is represented by one Lib Dem and two Labour councillors, one of who (Anna Semlyen) is not seeking re-election after just one term.

Cllr Ann Reid commented:

“Ashley and Stephen live locally and so know the area well. They have the energy and enthusiasm to make a positive impact on the council. Local residents recognise the work that the local Lib Dem team does, and understand that with a larger team of councillors we can achieve even more.”

Ann Reid was first elected to York City Council in 1986 and represented Foxwood Ward until ward boundaries were changed in 2003, and has represented Dringhouses & Woodthorpe ever since. Ann was Lord Mayor in 1993/94 and was Executive Member for Planning and Transport from 2003 – 2008 and for Environmental Services from 2008 – 2011. Ann has been a member of the Planning Committee since 1988 and more recently chaired the Learning and Culture Scrutiny Committee. Ann has been a Governor of Woodthorpe Primary School since 1986 and is a Trustee of Mayfields Community Trust and a member of the Company of Cordwainers. Ann’s three children were all educated at Woodthorpe Primary and Oaklands School.

Ashley Mason

Ashley Mason

Ashley Mason is 25 years old and has lived in York all of his life. His family home overlooks the Knavesmire. Ashley attended Knavesmire Primary, Millthorpe School and then York College. Ashley runs a successful small business in the city employing 40 staff. Before this he spent 5 years with North Yorkshire Police. As a young entrepreneur, Ashley wants to use his experience to help young people as they enter the world of work.

Stephen Fenton

Stephen Fenton

Stephen Fenton is 43 years old and has lived in Acomb since 2003 when he moved to the city to take up a new job. He currently works for the NHS. Stephen has been involved in a number of campaigns locally, including the fight to save the Beckfield Lane tip from closure. He has worked with Ann Reid over the past year on the campaign to protect York’s Green Belt from development. Stephen is a keen sportsman and is secretary of Poppleton tennis club, where he plays.

Essential resurfacing – Nelsons Lane, Dringhouses

City of York Council will be carrying out essential resurfacing works on Nelsons Lane, Dringhouses from 9 February. The work is expected to take one week, finishing on 13 February and will take place between 7pm and 11pm.

In order to carry out these works safely, a temporary road closure of Nelsons Lane will be in place. Residents are advised there will be no access or egress for vehicles during working hours except in emergencies.

There will be no on-street parking during these times. Residents who require vehicular access are asked to inform operatives onsite to ensure safety. Vehicular access will only be allowed if it is safe to do so. Pedestrian access will be available at all times.

As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption. Residents are assured that everything reasonably possible will be done to keep this to a minimum, however motorists should expect some delays and plan their journey accordingly.

The contractor carrying out the work will be responsible for safety.

20’s plenty campaign – private correspondence revealed by Council

Copies of Emails between Councillors and officials in York – exchanged in the run up to the launch of the wide area 20 mph speed limits in west York – have been published by the Council.20 mph sign

The exchange of Emails  can be viewed by clicking here

The project cost £600,000 to implement

The correspondence includes a request from Cllr Anna Semlyen for the use of a police radar speed gun (!)

This was the same Labour Councillor who argued that 20 mph speed limits should be introduced without consultation with residents.

Subsequently, as we now know, the new limits have had no effect on traffic speeds.

Help celebrate Dringhouses’ 150 Festival

Dringhouses Library

Dringhouses Library

Residents are invited to help celebrate a special birthday!

Dringhouses Library on Tadcaster Road is over 150 years old. First a Victorian school, the building became a library during World War Two in 1942.

Throughout July, the library will be commemorating the building’s role in the life of the people of Dringhouses for the last century and a half. Although it was built in 1852, the school and its teachers were legally required in 1863 to keep a daily log of pupils and teaching and so 150 years of records began then.

Some 80 years later in 1942, Colonel George Wilkinson left the building to the council, with the instructions: ‘The premises to be used as a public library or for such other public purpose for the benefit of the citizens of York, in particular the inhabitants of Dringhouses.’

The building, its history and current use will be celebrated as a place of community and learning through theatre, music, lectures, author talks and more.

The festival begins on Thursday 10 July with a play specially-commissioned by the library from Ellen Stevens, a recent theatre graduate of the University of York. In it, local actors and pupils from the current Dringhouses Primary School play the parts of their nineteenth-century counterparts in a piece of community theatre not to be missed!

Other festival events include a chamber music concert by group Bellissime of popular Victorian music, a local history group talk about the library, a talk by Big City Read author Tom Harper and lots more. The Dringhouses 150 Celebration Party on 9 August from 2-3:30pm draws events to a close, before the next 150 years begin!

This festival supports York Explore Libraries and Archives’ vision of enabling people to live fuller, more connected and engaged lives by celebrating the history, future and community of Dringhouses Library.

Fiona Williams, Chief Executive of Explore York Libraries and Archives, said: “Dringhouses Library is one of our most popular libraries and it is exciting to be celebrating how the building has been at the heart of its community for so long. Here’s to the next 150 years!”

For more information and to book places on the events please visit www.yortime.org.uk or call Dringhouses Library on 01904 552674 or visitwww.exploreyork.org.uk for the festival timetable.
