A film made by Khaoz Media, a youth-led voluntary community media project coordinated by City of York Council, has been nominated for an international award.

The short documentary has been put forward for an International Citizen Media Award and was created as part of Khaoz Media’s Accessible Broadcasting Community Project (ABC). The film details the ABC project through interviews with participants and includes examples of the audio-visual content produced in its workshops.

The ABC project was funded by cash from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation for York’s Year of Volunteering, and the project aims to develop Khaoz Media into an accessible and inclusive volunteering project for young people and young adults with learning and physical disabilities.

The 2nd International Citizen Media Award is a European scheme which honours ‘tremendous work in the field of citizen media’ that has been created by private, non-commercial organisations.

Khaoz Media aims to engage young people in community action projects through the media and new technologies.

Colm O’Rourke, volunteer for Khaoz Media, said: “Being nominated for this award is a real achievement for Khaoz Media; it’s a privilege to have been involved in the making of a film on a project which really sums up what the group is about – helping people from all aspects of life develop practical media skills.”

The Awards Ceremony will take place on 29 September in Münster, Germany, and the winning film makers will receive a €1,000 cash prize.
