Fantastic response to call for Olympic Torch stewards

With tickets for the Olympic Flame entertainment spectacular on Tuesday 19th June now available from Libraries, the City of York Council has announced that over 260 local people have signed up to ensure crowds watching the Olympic Torch on its journey through York stay safe and enjoy the experience.

The council and employee-volunteering charity York Cares have been working together to enlist the help of local people for the Torch’s visit to York.

The stewards are from a host of different organisations in York, including Aviva, City of York Council, Fera (Food and Environment Research Agency), Minster Law, Network Rail, Portakabin, the University of York, Wipro Technologies and more.

Throughout the Torch’s visit they will play an important role in helping manage and support the crowds, as well as assisting people with information on the Torch and convoy.

Holly Hennel, operations manager at York Cares, said: “The stewards have a vital role to play in acting as ambassadors for York and ensuring the city shines. We’re delighted that people from 32 local businesses and organisations have volunteered as individuals and with their colleagues. It will be a fantastic experience for everyone involved, including York Cares.”
