Sports Clubs open up facilities

The largest number of sports club in York to host open days have been put on the starting blocks by City of York Council to help get more people fitter and healthier as part of the York Gold 2012 summer of sporting activities.

Starting shortly after the Olympic Torch visits the city on 19 and 20 June, the programme of open days has been awarded the Inspire Mark by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) for its innovation and inclusivity.

So whether residents fancy having a go at an Olympic sport like sailing or volleyball, a Paralympic event like Boccia or if they’d prefer a stretch at yoga or climbing at Brimham Rocks, there’s something for everyone – at no cost. People who would like to get involved as volunteer supporters or coaches will also be welcomed – support of that sort is essential to help keep clubs running in years to come.

Starting off the open days on 21 June at 8pm, York Kendo Club will welcome people aged 16 years and over to Joseph Rowntree School to try for free the modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting based on traditional sword skills. Next, anyone who’s a capable swimmer can dive in for a game of Octopush for free at Yearsley Swimming Pool on 23 June at 4pm. Octopush, or underwater hockey, is a fun sport of two teams, each aiming to push a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into goals.

Sports sessions from York City Football Club to York RI Sailing Club, the city’s tennis, bowls, volleyball and netball clubs are all hosting open days to welcome anyone wanting to have a go.
