Liberal Democrats have failed in an attempt to overturn a controversial decision to cut social care in York.

The cuts mean that City of York Council’s community care service will be available only to those with substantial or critical needs, rather than those with “moderate” needs. 184 people with “moderate” needs will now lose their support, which can include help with shopping, bathing, showering or preparing meals.

The Liberal Democrat Group called-in the decision and it was debated at last night’s Corporate and Scrutiny Management Committee. The 5 Labour Councillors on the committee all supported the proposals and voted down the appeal.

Councillor Ian Cuthbertson, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Haxby and Wigginton who spoke against the plans, commented:
“Despite cross-party opposition and criticism from key local lobby groups, Labour used their majority on the scrutiny committee to force through these damaging cuts. The council’s consultation on the issue was described as ‘appalling’ by a group co-chaired by a Labour Councillor and we still have genuine unanswered questions about the feasibility of the plans.

“These changes will affect some of the most vulnerable residents in York. It means nearly 200 residents will now have to pay for their own care and support, and those who can’t afford to pay will have to do as best they can. Liberal Democrats think this is totally unacceptable.

“Labour has choices where to spend taxpayers money. If they cut things like the Leader’s £1 million personal slush fund or the money paid to Trade Union officials they could afford to maintain frontline social care. It is completely untrue that these cuts are being forced upon them.”
