Gym doubles size to boost city sports provision

The award-winning leisure centre “Energise” located on Cornlands Road has doubled the size of its gym.

The gym now accommodates 95 users – previously 56 – at any one time, and has extra space to improve access for disabled users.

Amongst the new equipment are the UK’s only two Power Plate Pro7 fitness machines. These are helpful for people recovering from injury, with medical conditions including multiple sclerosis and who are trying to build their fitness and improve their overall health under the supervision of Energise’s expert fitness instructors or as part of the council’s Health, Exercise, Activity and Lifestyle (HEAL) programme. Energise’s new gym equipment also includes cardio vascular equipment such as treadmills and arc trainers, as well as a new suspension exercise system, indoor cycling studio and an extended free weights area.

The Council loaned £300,000 to help fund the expansion. It will be repaid from income generated by additional members. The work was completed on schedule earlier this month.

Energise was the first leisure centre in the UK to be awarded the Inclusive Fitness Industry Mark, which means that all the equipment is set up to be used by all users, including those with disabilities. It was also a finalist in the Best Performer leisure centre category for the national Association of Public Service Excellence awards, out 272 facilities across 32 local authorities awards in December 2011

New members are being welcomed with unlimited use of the fitness suite, together with access to the climbing wall at Energise well as swimming and workout classes at both Energise and Yearsley Pool. Members also get a free induction and free personal programmes to help them achieve their goals.
