Keep thieves out this Christmas

North Yorkshire Police is urging the public to be on their guard as Christmas criminals look for easy targets.

At this time of year, opportunistic thieves are on the lookout for insecure vehicles and properties which are filled with expensive Christmas presents.

Officers are keen to warn shoppers that leaving cars unlocked or items on view is an open invitation to thieves.

Just by taking some simple security steps, you can avoid a miserable Christmas and keep thieves at bay.

Always park in well lit areas, lock the doors, close the windows and sunroof, and activate the alarm if you have one.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Kell, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “Being a victim of crime at this time of year can really ruin your Christmas, especially if all the presents you have bought for your family and friends are stolen.

“Many thefts are avoidable and occur because cars or homes have been left insecure. This is a dream come true for thieves who relish a gift like an open window or an unlocked door.

“Don’t let criminals enjoy Christmas at your expense and ensure you take the proper security measures to keep them out.”

It is also important for trades people to be security conscious as tools are attractive items for thieves.

Don’t leave tools in your van overnight or on display while your vehicle is unattended.
