More alley gates planned for York

£70,000 is to be invested over the next two years for new alley gating schemes to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour across the city and help residents feel safe and secure in their homes.

Alley gates are placed on alleyways to the rear of houses to deter burglars from gaining access to homes.

This year it is proposed that the new gates will be installed on alleyways within Micklegate, Clifton and Holgate Wards. Affected residents will be consulted shortly and before any final decisions are made. If residents support the proposals it is anticipated that these schemes will be completed by the end of March 2014.

The proposed scheme in Micklegate represents the largest of the three schemes with five alleyways to be consulted on. A single alleyway has been put forward for consultation in both Clifton Ward and Holgate Ward. More information on alley gates can be found at www.york.gov.uk/alleygating.
