Visually impared sports event on Sunday

York’s first sports event for visually-impaired or blind residents organised by City of York Council as part of its Celebrating Ability Week is taking place on Sunday 10 August at Joseph Rowntree School, Haxby Road, York.

The event is the first of its kind and has been organised by the council in conjunction with the Wilberforce Trust, the York Blind and Partially Sighted Society and British Blind Sport as part of Celebrating Ability Week (4 to 10 August).

The afternoon of sports and games gives residents a chance to try different activities adapted for visual impairment and to find out more about continuing the sports on a regular basis across the city.

George Ferguson, National Development Manager of British Blind Sport said: “It is fabulous to see visually impaired organisations working in collaboration with the Sport & Active Leisure Team from City of York Council and we are delighted to support this event, dedicated to allowing people with a visual impairment to try different sports and help them maintain a more active life.”

The event will take place from 12noon until 4pm and is suitable for those aged eight and over. The cost per participant is £3 and will go towards covering the facility hire. Family members are all welcome to take part too.

Anyone who would like support getting to the event is invited to meet outside Cycle Heaven at York Railway Station at 10.45am to catch a bus (at their own cost) as a group to Joseph Rowntree School. There will be the same support back to the Railway Station at the end of the afternoon. Food is not available on site so bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.
