York’s Young Inspectors will present a report on the Mansion House and its projected uses to the Lord Mayor on Monday 17 November following a trip to the historic house in the city centre.
The Young Inspectors is a project funded by City of York Council, which sees a group of young people trained to go into services across the city and advise on how the service can be improved for young people.
As well as their visit to the Mansion House the group has been to York Minster, Relate Counselling Service and the Urbie bus – a mobile youth provision in the city – and has written reports on the visit offering advice and suggesting potential changes from a young person’s perspective.
The visitors were welcomed to the Mansion House for a guided tour and a briefing about the ‘Opening Doors’ project, which is seeking to secure Heritage Lottery Funding. The project is designed to develop a unique and dynamic visitor experience and looks to improve the display of the gold and silver collection, reduce the carbon footprint of the building and restore the 18th century kitchens.
The report, which can be found at http://www.yor-zone.org.uk/yi-mansion-house.htm discussed improvements for the visitor project and offered comment on accessibility, atmosphere, information and feedback, as well as reviewing the Mansion House website.
Feedback included suggestions to publicise opening times more and use the house to stage theatre productions for a younger audience.
