Travellers set up camp in Dringhouses

We have been contacted by a number of local residents who are concerned about a traveller camp that has appeared on a football pitch at the rear of York College. It is located off a cycle and footpath to the south of the ‘Revival’ housing estate off the Askham Bar roundabout.

A particular concern is the fact that a wooden bollard has been removed where the cycle path meets the green lane path. Vehicles are now driving along this well-used walking and cycling route.

The Police, York College and City of York Council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement team have been notified.

I walk around this area every morning and would note the following
Litter is everywhere including sheets of used, discarded toilet paper
The playing field has been churned up in places from car/ caravan wheels and I observed a quad bike racing around damaging the surface the other day

    Thanks

I live along the cycle path very close by to the college football field. The amount of noise and litter which has accumulated since the groups arrival is concerning! Not to mention the risks to cyclists, runners, children, elderly and dog walkers when I’ve witnessed some of their vehicles are driving up and down the cycle path! My understanding is that only York Council employees or certain other agencies have the authority to use the path for vehicles when accessing either the dog litter bins or the racecourse to cut the grass or prepare for race events? This is a highly respectable area which myself and other residents take a great deal of pride in and it’s a worry that they are still here almost a week on. I’m fairly sure traveller groups have to have a special permit to reside in areas and there are designated sites in the Clifton Moor area of York. I really hope the situation is being closely monitored by the council and an order has been put in place to remove them.
