These tennis sessions are for children aged 4 to 14yrs. Children aged 4 to 9yrs will attend the 1pm to 2pm session and children aged 10 to 14yrs will attend the session taking place at 2pm to 3pm.

All attendees will receive tuition from a highly qualified tennis coach. The tennis coach (Andy) is fun and engaging and on previous camps children have developed their skills while having fun.

Sessions cost £4 per person per class and operate on a pay as you play basis, limited spaces are available – to book your child on to a camp please contact: andycrockett@tennisforallyork.co.uk

Adult cycle training

Take to the saddle

Sat 3 Aug, 10am to 1pm, Rowntree Park

If you or someone you know has never learned to ride a bike or not been on a bike for a number of years then this training would be ideal. The sessions will be broken down into hourly slots, led by City of York Council cycle trainers who will provide friendly help and advice to get you in the saddle, no matter what your previous experience – anyone can learn!

Bikes can be provided

The Police have launched a new community challenge aimed at filling in some of the spare hours that young people have during the school summer holidays

City Centre Cycle Races 21st July 2013

York will host the 2013 men’s and women’s British Cycling National Circuit Race Championships on the day that the 100th Tour de France draws to a close. Come and join the fun

York City Centre Cycle Races just got bigger – this year’s event will not just coincide with the Final of the Tour de France 2012 but will play host to the British Cycling National Circuit Race Championships and mark the launch of York’s Sky Ride.

Three Big Screens will carry all the excitement of the event which will be the largest held in the City Centre of York – until of course 2014 when we play host to the Tour de France.

Guaranteed to have something for all the family this will be a unique day in the City of York – and when our own Races and the Championships have finished there will be the opportunity to see the final stage of the Tour de France on the screens and the handing over to Yorkshire the Grande Depart 2014.

Acomb Explore Library – Festival events on Saturday

From 9am – 3pm on Saturday 20th July, we’ll be helping to celebrate the first ever ADAM Festival (Acomb Dance and Music Festival). We’ll be presenting the following free events throughout the day:

10.00 – 10.45am : Ross Meikle
Ross Meikle is a York-based storyteller who entertains audiences with his original fairy tales and fanciful fantasies with charm, gentle innuendo, and an improvised running commentary to each story.

11.00 – 11.45am : Le Petit Artiste Theatre Present ‘Hunt The Giggle’ Le Petit Artiste Theatre are an emerging theatre from the Central School of Speech and Drama. They have a passion for theatre that pushes the boundaries using puppetry, mask and live music. Free tickets available from Explore Acomb Library Learning Centre.

12.00 – 12.30pm : Cactus
Dave Brough and Liam Wilkinson have been performing as an acoustic duo in York for the last six years. With their tight blend of harmonies and a repertoire of well-known foot-tappers and self-penned songs, Cactus always guarantee an entertaining show.

12.30 – 1.00pm : Anneliese Emmans Dean
Anneliese has written poems for children and adults, performing them at festivals, theatres and even the UK’s largest planetarium. She is the founder of theBigBuzz, bringing poetry to life. Annaliese will be reading a selection of poems as well as judging our ADAM Festival Children’s Poetry Competition.

1.00 – 1.30pm : Gordon McJannett
As an electric guitar instrumentalist, Gordon McJannett dazzles with his interpretations of hits by such artists as Fleetwood Mac and The Shadows. Lovers of that unique 1950s and 60s guitar sound will love his expert performance.

2.00 – 2.45pm : Le Petit Artiste Theatre Present ‘Hunt The Giggle’

Rowntree Park birthday party

The annual summer fair will take place on Sat 13 July 2013, 2pm to 5pm and promises to be a great day out for all the family. The event is being organised by City of York Council’s ranger team and the Friends of Rowntree Park.

The Rowntree Company gave Rowntree Park as a gift to the people of the city 92 years ago on 16 July 1921 in memory of workers who fell during the war. Every summer a ‘birthday party’ is held to remember this event, and a cake will be cut during the celebrations in honour of the park and its origins.

Will your children dare take the challenge?

creepy houseJoin this year’s Summer Reading Challenge running in every York library from Sat 13 July to Sun 15 Sept 2013.

Our Theme is a mysterious adventure called “Creepy House”. We challenge all 5 to 12 year olds to read 6 books in 3 stages.

Stage 1: The Awful Upstairs – read two books and collect stickers to reveal its residents.

Stage 2: The Gruesome Ground Floor – read two more books to discover who is hiding there.

Stage 3: The Spine-tingling Cellar – read two final books and complete the challenge by unveiling the bone shaking Skeleton Family Robinson.

Every time you read a book there will be a small prize and everyone who completes the challenge will be entered into a draw to win a Kindle Fire HD . There is also a mini challenge for Under 5s to collect stickers as they read.

The challenge launches at Explore York Library with a day of activities on Sat 13 July 11am to 4pm, but don’t worry if you can’t get there you can join up any time over the summer at any York library.
