The York Council has issued a statement saying,
“City of York Council has taken the decision to add a further collection in January to pick up out of season garden waste.
City of York Council is reminding residents that the current schedule of garden waste collections is due to end shortly for the winter period. However, the council has taken the decision to add a further collection in January to pick up out of season garden waste. This is due to mild weather experienced up to now, and because many leaves are still yet to fall.
This will mean the council will be able to collect all the autumn waste and Christmas trees”.
Reacting to the news that Labour run City of York Council has taken the decision to add a further green bin collection in January to pick up winter garden waste, the Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Keith Aspden (who sent a join letter from opposition councillors on Tuesday calling for an extra collection) commented:
“I am pleased that after pressure form opposition councillors and residents Labour has been forced to add another garden waste collection round in January. Liberal Democrats have called for the re-instatement of winter green bin collections ever since Labour cut them. After a mild autumn and with leaves still falling from trees across York this is the very least the council should be doing.
“However, it is disappointing that this one-off wintercollection will not take place until January and what this u-turn really shows is that it was a mistake for Labour to end winter collections in the first place. Clearly, Labour’s policy to cut recycling services and end regular winter garden waste collections needs a complete rethink.”
The Council also says
During the winter months residents can take additional garden waste to Hazel Court and Towthorpe Household Waste Recycling Centres free of charge in a car. Residents using larger vehicles or trailers will need to apply for permits to use the sites.
Home composting is also a great way to manage waste at home and provide nutrient rich compost for gardens. Visit http://www.getcomposting.com/ for further information or to purchase a reduced price home compost bin to get started.
Ahead of the new collection season in 2015, households with more than one green wheeled bin can sign up to the additional green bin scheme which operates during the usual garden waste season.
