Civic Party to join tributes at remembrance commemorations

The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Ian Gillies, will pay respect to soldiers and ex service personnel at the city’s official remembrance service and parade in the Memorial Gardens on Leeman Road on Sunday 9 November.

The Civic Party will be joined by Councillors, Honorary Alderman, chief officers and invited guests in departing from the Guildhall in procession for the annual event this Sunday.

The main parade will depart from the Eye of York at 10.30am, including serving military personnel from services and regiments across the city, along with civilian organisations, including Scouts, Guides and St John Ambulance, and will arrive at the Memorial Gardens in Leeman Road for the annual service and commemoration at 11am.

The service will start with the firing of a minute gun to denote a two minute silence. There will be prayers and wreath laying by representatives of organisations from across the city, including the Lord Mayor, City of York Council Chief Executive Kersten England, along with Barry Dodd CBE, the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

Following the commemorations, the parade will once again make its way through the city centre and upon arrival at St Helen’s Square the Lord Mayor and the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire will be on the steps of the Mansion House, along with senior military representatives to take the salute from the parade.

The Lord Mayor will also attend a short Armistice Day service at the Station War memorial on Tuesday 11 November. The service will see the Civic Party join members of the Royal British Legion for a short service of remembrance at 11am.

The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of York Cllr Ian Gillies said: “I am proud to involved in the commemorations taking place across the city. Such events are an important part of the civic calendar and I hope to see residents and visitors joining us along the parade route.

“It is crucial we as a city remember those who sacrificed their lives in order to secure peace in the world and this year’s commemorations will be particularly poignant as we have reached the 100th anniversary of the First World War starting.”

Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place on Sunday 9 November for the Remembrance Sunday Parade between 7am and 2pm at the following locations: Duncombe Place, High Petergate, Lendal, St Helens Square, Coney Street, Spurriergate, Leeman Road, Tower Street, Clifford Steet, Nessgate, High Ousegate, Station Avenue, St Leonard’s Place, Lendal and Museum Street.
