Scarborough footbridge to be closed again

City of York Council will be installing new street lighting on Scarborough bridge footbridge this month, which will require a temporary closure of the footbridge for up to three days.

From Tuesday 14 April through to Thursday 16 April, the footbridge will be closed between 8am and 6pm in order for the works to be carried out safely.

It is unclear why the work wasn’t done during the recent month long closure of the adjacent railway bridge.

A completely new cycle bridge is also due to be installed later in the year

The new lighting will compliment the recent works to upgrade Scarborough Railway Bridge by Network Rail and deliver an overall vision to further increase the number of people cycling and walking in this area.

The Council says, “existing LED lights will be replaced with improved and more modern LEDs which will be raised slightly to try and alleviate vandalism. They will also provide a clearer light, which will help make people feel safer at night.

The works will not affect the railway line and train journeys will continue as usual throughout this time. Advanced notice signs are already in place in the vicinity of Scarborough Bridge to provide advanced warning to pedestrians and cyclists.

An alternative route will be available via Riverside Walk, Museum Street, Esplanade and vice versa.
There are a number of reasons why an increasing number of council’s across the country including Worcester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leicestershire, Durham, Salford, Bury and Plymouth are choosing to install LED lighting::

  • LED lighting has a lower energy consumption (offering the lowest possible running costs: less than 100 watts for the highest power units; whereas with other forms of lighting much more energy is wasted generating heat)
  • Superior quality illumination (even spread of light, no dark or bright spots, better targeting especially with higher-end LED lighting products)
  • Longer product life and reliability (up to 100,000 hours – in comparison fluorescent bulbs typically last 10,000 hours and incandescent bulbs 1,000; the best LED products available today deliver 10-years life, with warranty)
  • No maintenance (no bulb failure, no down-time)
  • Instant start (no warm up time for full light output)
  • Suitable for challenging environments (higher-end products are weather-hardened, hot and cold climate tolerant, vandal resistant) “
