Experts in the field of sustainability and climate change are inviting community groups to join them at one of several events being held across the region to talk about tackling climate change.

The special event takes place at City of York Council’s West Offices (Snow Room) from 12noon on Thursday 3 December.

The engagement session focuses on the new ‘For the Love of Yorkshire’ climate campaign and also the benefits of tackling climate change for cities and regions.

This session takes place during the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference on 30 November to 11 December, which is recognised as being one of the most important international efforts in recent years. The’ For the Love of Yorkshire’ campaign will also be taking climate messages from York to the European conference.

 

Closer to home, a number of successful campaigns  have already made good progress to raise awareness of and encourage ways to help tackle climate change including Edible York, the Green Streets Challenge, i-Travel York and the regional Better Homes scheme. They also work alongside and help promote key messages integrated within York’s Climate Change Framework and Action Plan.

Cllr Andrew Waller, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “The UN Conference Climate Change is likely to see the EU commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent before 2030. York should be ready to play its part in this and as a local council we need to be increasing recycling and reducing carbon emissions.

“We are committed to working with partners across the region to help deliver this action here in York. We’ve launched a number of successful campaigns over the years and we are now building on this through York’s Climate Change Framework and Action Plan.

“We are working hard to improve recycling services for residents and our council plan commits us to working towards the principle of ‘One Planet Living’, this will ensure that sustainability is at the heart of what we do as a local council.”

Kate Lock from For the Love of Yorkshire, Jacqui Warren, the council’s Sustainability Officer and David Midgley from Zero Carbon Yorkshire will be hosting the session next month.
