In our recent FOCUS newsletter we set out details of the draft Local Plan for York that the joint administration has developed.
We are pleased that the draft plan, if approved, would see land off Moor Lane given proper Green Belt protection. This is great news, after the previous Labour administration in York proposed initially that the land be built on, and then said that it should be ‘safeguarded’ for future development.
So whilst we may have won this battle, we haven’t yet won the war. The draft Local Plan is now out for consultation, and if residents want to see the land off Moor Lane given Green Belt protection, they need to make your views known by responding to the consultation.
We now know that developers are fighting the proposed designation of this land as Green Belt – Barwood Development Securities Ltd are promoting an alternative plan that would see a staggering 1,250 homes built all the way from the railway line to the ring road roundabout. You can read more about these worrying proposals on at http://tinyurl.com/zst8bqr
This new threat makes it even more important that residents respond to the consultation to express support for the council’s draft Local Plan.
The consultation runs until 12th September, and there are lots of ways to take part:
- You can go to www.york.gov.uk/localplan to view the Local Plan proposals and complete an online form
- You can e-mail localplan@york.gov.uk
- You can write to Freepost RTEG-TYYU-KLTZ, Local Plan, City of York Council, West Offices, Station Rise, York YO1 6GA
- A special copy of the council’s ’Our City’ newsletter will also be arriving on doormats shortly, summarising the consultation information and providing a freepost response form
There will also be a drop-in exhibition at Tesco Askham Bar on Wednesday 24th August from 3pm to 7.30pm.
This consultation is about the draft Local Plan that the council is proposing, not about the Barwood proposals. It is vital that as individuals, and as a community, we express our support for the plan to give land off Moor Lane proper Green Belt protection.
The green belt land is home to much wildlife and much of it can be seen on a daily basis from the surrounding roads. If the proposed housing estate goes ahead this wildlife will be lost to future generations.
As a resident in the area access to and from moor lane isn’t the best and both roads in and out if York at each end of moor lane are notorious for traffic ques. Adding more traffic to these conjested roads will not any cause delays to new residents but will impact on all current traffic and increase pollution and cause further delays on what is a frustrating journey.
I am completely opposed to the to the Moor Lane development in any form. Apart from the fact that Askham Bog is an important nature reserve, and green belt, the impact on the already conjested roads in the area will be chaotic.
City of York Council speaks of concern about air quality in the City, what about air quality in the our local area?
I have not spoken to any local resident who is in favour of this development so why should our views be overlooked. i suspect the opportunity to make money overrides the concerns of local residents. I hope i am wrong!!
Has York City Council/ Planning lost their marbles?? How can you even contemplate demolishing such a beautiful pristine place, habitat for a multitude of flora and fauna including an abundance of insect, birds and wildlife not to mention the local family of deer that can be seen in the fields on a nearly daily basis. How can you decimate such an amazing place, an area adjoining is the fantastic Askam Bog what a place to visit a true gem of a habitat and located just on the outskirts of this beautiful city Shame on you.
That being said lets look at the impact on the local environment catastrophic!!. Estimate another 1000 cars in the area on an already heavily congested area in fact GRIDLOCK :-St Helens Bridge,Tadcaster Road,Moor Lane ,Chaloners Road not to mention the outer ring-road total chaos and on days when events are taking place in York , including Race Days SHUTDOWN Now lets consider the UKs other issues in all major cities POLLUTION .Planning to build this amount of housing with the existing infrastructure is mindless Schools,Nurseries,Surgeries,Hospitals and the existing road network put the whole of this area under extreme pressure THINK AGAIN YORK CITY COUNCIL remember you were elected by the people for the people and the ballot box is just round the corner you could be looking for new employment?
Your comments suggest that City of York Council is proposing to develop the land off Moor Lane. This is not correct. The land is designated as Green Belt in the draft Local Plan. A developer has submitted a planning application (which they are entitled to do), which is being vigorously opposed by many residents and local ward councillors.
