Woodthorpe Family Fun Day success

The first ever Woodthorpe Family Fun Day, held on Saturday 13th August, was a huge success. The event was organised by the Woodthorpe York Community Group, with funds raised in support of St Leonards Hospice.

There was live entertainment and a range of stalls run by local community groups, plus plenty of activities for children.

Stephen and Ann gathered views from young people on what they like best about local play areas, and what improvements they would like to see made. The comments received will support our bid for funds from the council to improve the play areas at Woodthorpe and on Nelsons Lane.

Moor Lane green belt plans challenged

The council recently set out its proposals for York’s Local Plan, which includes designating land off Moor Lane as green belt. Previous draft plans brought forward under the Labour administration had proposed building on this land, and then ‘safeguarding’ it for development.

At a meeting of the council’s Local Plan Working Group on 27th June, a speaker from HOW Planning put forward an alternative vision for the land off Moor Lane, which would see 1,250 houses built on the site.

A letter sent to members of the Local Plan Working Group by Northampton-based Barwood Development Securities Ltd is available here – Letter to LPWG members 270616, and their ‘vision document’ setting out their plans for the site, is available here – Moor Lane Vision Doc .

The document includes a map showing the extent of the land that Barwood propose to develop (copied below). The proposals cover a much larger area than was included in the previous draft plan as ‘safeguarded’ land.

Local councillor Ann Reid, who is a member of the Local Plan Working Group, said  “I do not support these proposals, and made that clear at last night’s meeting. Local residents who backed the campaign to protect the land off Moor Lane as green open space will be alarmed at what is being proposed here.”

“The consultation on the proposed Local Plan – which would see the land off Moor Lane protected from development – is likely to get underway in mid July. It is important that everyone who wants to see this area protected takes part in that consultation and makes their views known.”

Woodthorpe shops repair work underway

We are pleased to report that the Co-op estates team is making good on its commitment to put right some of the issues identified for action around Woodthorpe shops.

Before Christmas, trees were pruned and drains cleared. Now work is underway to replace broken bollards and paving slabs in the area to the side of the shops, at the entrance to the car park – pictured below.

Local Lib Dem councillors will now seek permission from the Co-op for the double yellow lines at the entrance to the car park to be repainted.

Flooding hits Woodthorpe

An overflowing ditch caused flooding in Woodthorpe on Boxing Day, affecting properties on Coeside and Nevis Way.

Water from the ditch flowed through gardens and garages onto the street. Council staff have delivered sandbags to the properties affected, which can be deployed should the ditch overflow again. A request has also been logged for debris to be removed from the grate in the ditch where is passes under Moor Lane.

Woodthorpe arrests

York Police just tweeted, “report received regarding 3 males taking advantage of vulnerable elderly male in Woodthorpe apparently having driven him to a cash machine.

Van sighted and stopped.

£400 belonging to victim recovered and 3 males arrested for fraud offences. Incidents like that are hard hitting and sickening and will not be tolerated.

These 3 males off the streets is a good result”
