The Woodthorpe Community Group is holding a fundraising coffee morning for Macmillan on Saturday 30 September at St James the Deacon from 10.15am to 12.15. All are welcome for some coffee or tea and cake!
Mixed news on double yellow lines
At a Decision Meeting on 14 September, the council’s Executive Member for Planning & Transport, Cllr Ian Gillies, approved the installation of double yellow lines at a number of locations. These measures will now be advertised, with the opportunity for residents to object if they wish to.
The report that sets out the proposed double yellow lines is available Here. The locations where double yellow lines were approved are:
- Junction of Cherry Lane and St Edwards Close (see map below)
- Junction of Ainsty Avenue and Mayfield Grove
- Junction of Nelsons Lane and Breary Close
- Moorcroft Road, from the doctors surgery to first junction with Bramble Dene
However a number of additional schemes which local ward councillors had supported were turned down:
- Moor Lane, near the entrance to Chapmans Pond
- North Lane, near junction with Jervis Road
- Junction of Acorn Way and Wharfe Drive
- Moorcroft Road, in front of the dentists
Cllr Ann Reid spoke at the meeting to ask Cllr Gillies to include these additional schemes, but to no avail.
Residents decide on playground proposals
A large number of children and adults came along to the drop-in sessions at the Woodthorpe Green playground on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning to see the options for improving the play area.
Everyone was asked to vote for their first and second preferences out of the four plans on display.

Woodthorpe Green play improvements – vote for your favourite scheme!
The play area at Woodthorpe Green is going to be updated with some new equipment, thanks to funding from City of York Council and the Dringhouses & Woodthorpe Ward Committee.
The Woodthorpe Community Group is working with the council to gather feedback on plans that have been submitted by playground companies and would like everyone who uses the park to come along and vote for their preferred design.
Representatives from the Community Group will be in the playground from 3-4pm on Friday 22nd September and 10-11am on Saturday 23rd September. Playground users are invited to come along and vote for their favourite design.
Ultra Fibre Optic works get underway
Work had got underway to lay Ultra Fibre Optic cable beneath the pavements across the ward, starting in the Thanet Road area. The work is being undertaken by contractors on behalf of TalkTalk. Residents should receive a leaflet about the works two weeks in advance, and then again 48 hours before the crews arrive.

What’s on – Celebrate York / Münster twinning anniversary at City Screen
City Screen joins the 60th anniversary celebrations of York’s twinning with the city of Münster with a screening of the delightfully quirky German comedy Toni Erdmann on Monday 18 September at 5:15pm.
York was one of the first cities in Britain to partner with a German city after WWII, encouraged by the Foreign Office to promote healing and contribute to a more secure peace in Europe. Since 1957 many exchanges have taken place between Münster and York including schools, choirs, sports teams, art exhibitions, and civic receptions. Many people’s photos and reminiscences are currently on show in an exhibition upstairs at York Explore.

The first one of these, Toni Erdmann, finds excruciating humour and great pathos in a comedy drama about an embarrassing parent. What’s on – Joint Ward Committee meeting agenda published
The agenda for the Ward Committee to be held on Tuesday 26 September has been published.
The meeting, which is a joint meeting of the Dringhouses & Woodthorpe and Westfield Ward Committees, will take place at the York Indoor Bowls Club on Thanet Road. There will be a drop-in session at 6.30pm, with the main meeting starting at 7pm.
Any residents who are not able to make the meeting can catch up with their Drighouses & Woodthorpe ward councillors as they stop off on a cycle round the ward at Tadcaster Road Post Office (5pm), Wains Grove shops (5.35pm) and Moorcroft Road shops (6.05pm).
Weekend litter pick success
Residents joined local Lib Dem councillors with community clean-up activities around Dringhouses & Woodthorpe ward on 2nd and 3rd September.
On Saturday 2nd, the Chaloners Road / Eason View area was litter picked, and on Sunday 3rd a larger team tackled the Askham Bar old Park & Ride site and surrounding area.

A number of passers by told us that they have recently seen rats in and around the car park, which is concerning but not surprising given the disgusting amount of food waste and packaging that some irresponsible people see fit to dump here.
Free energy-saving advice sessions
Residents in west York can benefit from free energy-saving advice sessions being run by Citizens Advice York at Acomb Explore on 15 August and 19 September from 2pm to 4pm. There are also advice sessions every Thursday morning at the Sanderson Court community centre on Chapelfields.
Defibrilator training boost
Local Liberal Democrat councillors were pleased to help the Dringhouses Bowling Club secure a new defibrillator, along with free training in its use for eight club members.
The Bowling Club, which is based at York Racecourse Stables, was awarded £1,600 by the Dringhouses and Woodthorpe Ward Committee.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Ashley Mason, who is also a paramedic, offered to train the members in how to use the equipment, saving the club £350. York Racecourse was also kind enough to let the Bowling Club use their facilities for no charge for the training.
