Sun shines on Revival family fun day

Residents of the Revival estate, off Tadcaster Road, enjoyed their second annual family fun day on Sunday 16th July. The event was organised by the Revival Residents Community Association, with financial support from the Dringhouses & Woodthorpe Ward Committee. The event was also supported by Greenbelt, who are responsible for managing the green spaces on the estate, and a team from Tesco who ran a tombola stall.

Many local businesses generously donated prizes for the raffle, including the Co-op, Tesco, Ged Bell the butchers, the Marriott Hotel, Confident U, Lindsey Richardson personal trainer, Studio 76, Julie Mercer beautician and the Cross Keys pub on Tadcaster Road.

£170 was donated by Yorkshire Housing which was used to buy the spacehopper equipment which was a big hit with the children.

Cllr Stephen Fenton commented  “The local volunteers who organised this fantastic event deserve a huge amount of credit. Their efforts have helped to bring the community together and create a positive atmosphere.”

The inflatable obstacle course was a hit with young and old alike!

Action on overhanging vegetation

Cllr Stephen Fenton is taking action to have overhanging vegetation cut back which poses a hazard to pedestrians and motorists.

On Aintree Court, near the junction with Mayfield Grove, vegetation from the Railway Pond site was encroaching into the road, forcing motorists to drive towards the centre of the road on what is a blind bend. This was reported and it has now been cut back.

On Acomb Wood Drive, a stretch of vegetation near the phone box, opposite the entrance to the pub car park, was obstructing the footpath making it difficult for pedestrians to pass. This was reported and has been cut back.

Over the road at the entrance to the pub car park, a clump of vegetation has been left to grow out of control, blocking access to the footpath and the cycle racks. This is on private land, so we are trying to get some action taken to have this cut back.

Finally, at the entrance to the Woodlands estate on Bellhouse Way, vegetation was obstructing the cycle / foot path. The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust have taken action to have some of the vegetation cut back.

Mayfield Grove development plans approved

A planning application which proposes the demolition of a bungalow on Mayfield Grove and the construction of three homes on the site was approved by the council’s Area Planning Committee on Thursday 6 July.

Cllr Ashley Mason spoke at the meeting to express his opposition to the plans on the grounds of over-development and the impact on the local area of a potential increase in on-street parking. Cllr Mason had addressed the planning committee earlier in the year when the application was first presented and was subsequently deferred to enable a bat survey to be undertaken.

A webcast of the 6 July Area Planning Committee meeting is available Here. Cllr Mason speaks 51 minutes into the meeting.

Good turnout for Wilberforce Trust drop-in session

Over 40 local residents attended the drop-in session arranged by the Wilberforce Trust on 6 July at St Leonard’s Hospice.

The Wilberforce Trust plans to build 30 flats for its tenants on land it owns to the north of The Grove, off Tadcaster Road. The Trust is a York-based charity that provides specialist housing and support for people with visual impairments, sensory impairments and other disabilities.

It is anticipated that a planning application will be submitted later this month, with the aim for building work to start in Spring 2018 and completion in mid to late 2019.

Weed spraying gets underway

Due to very good recent growing conditions, council officers have decided to bring forward by one week the second application of herbicide to control weeds along kerb lines, footpaths and back lanes. So the spraying started on Monday 3rd July, rather than 10th July as had been planned.

Over the coming weeks we will monitor the impact of the spraying and highlight any areas that may have been missed.

Dementia activity sessions get underway

A Woodthorpe-based charity is to run themed activity sessions for people living with dementia. The first session, on the theme of ‘A day at the seaside’, is on Thursday 6 July from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at St James the Deacon church hall on Sherringham Drive – see poster below for details.

Residents invited to have their say on Wilberforce Trust development proposals

Local residents are invited to attend a drop-in session to have their say on proposals by the Wilberforce Trust to build 30 flats for its tenants on land it owns to the north of The Grove, off Tadcaster Road.

The proposals, which include a social/community hub for tenants and offices for the charity, will be on display at the Sunflower Centre at St Leonard’s Hospice on Thursday 6th July from 4.30pm to 8pm. A Wilberforce Trust leaflet (copied below) is being delivered to local homes to publicise the drop-in session.

In the most recent draft Local Plan, this piece of land had been provisionally allocated for residential extra care facilities in association with the Wilberforce Trust.

Cabinet graffiti clean-up success

Cllr Stephen Fenton spent the afternoon of Saturday 17 June blitzing the graffiti that has blighted a number of Virgin Media cabinets in Dringhouses & Woodthorpe.

Using special wipes designed to remove paint, Stephen cleaned up a total of eight cabinets on Chaloners Road, Wharfe Drive, Eason View, Thanet Road and Lowick.

The graffiti had first been reported to Virgin Media last year but they took no action, so the time had come to take some direct action.
