Residents’ views sought on parking at The Horseshoe

Councillors Ashley Mason and Stephen Fenton canvassed opinion among residents of The Horseshoe over the weekend about how to tackle thoughtless and dangerous parking,

Access to the street is being hindered by non-residents parking up in The Horseshoe, off Tadcaster Road, and then going into town or perhaps to York College. The photograph below demonstrates the issues residents face.

Stephen and Ashley asked residents for their views on potential options such as extending the double yellow lines, or installing single yellow lines to prevent parking on the street on weekdays during working hours. This latter approach has been used on nearby Middlethorpe Drive.

Stephen commented “We got a lot of helpful feedback from the residents whom we spoke with. We are mindful of the risk of solving one problem but in doing so creating new problems, such as pushing commuter parking further into the street. That’s why we’re seeking residents’ views on this issue.”

North Lane flytipping removed

We are pleased to report that Network Rail have taken action to remove the rubbish that had been dumped at the end of North Lane by the railway line.

This will come as a relief to local residents who had been concerned that the rubbish had been left to accumulate for many weeks.

Askham Bar litter pick success

Cllr Stephen Fenton was joined by seven local volunteers for a litter pick at the old Park & Ride site on Sunday 15th May.

“I’d like to thank the volunteers who gave up their Sunday afternoon to join in the litter pick. We managed to bag a decent haul of rubbish.”

Stephen also swept the cycle path that runs along the side of the nursery building, where there was a lot of detritus in which weeds were starting to take root. Other cycle tracks in the vicinity have been reported as needing a good sweep.

Community litter pick this Sunday

Cllr Stephen Fenton is organising a community litter pick this Sunday, 15th May, at the old Askham Bar park & ride site (now known as the ‘Moor Lane pay & display car park’). The litter pick will start at 2pm and finish at 4pm. A similar event in January generated over 50 bags of rubbish.

Councillor’s vow on Chaloners Road speed management

Speeding remains a concern on Chaloners Road

Local Lib Dem councillor Stephen Fenton has vowed to continue to campaign for speed management measures to be introduced on the stretch of Chaloners Road between Thanet Road and the junction with Dringfield Close.

Hopes has been raised that the area may qualify for funding for a flashing ‘Vehicle Activated Sign’ to remind motorists of the 30mph limit. However new speed data showed an “85th percentile speed of 33mph, concurrent with guidance for 30mph.” This meant that the site is no longer a priority for speed management funding.

Stephen commented “For many years residents have had to put up with speeding traffic. This isn’t the end of the story. We will now consider if Ward funding could be used for speed management measures on this section of Chaloners Road.”

Mayfield Grove / Aintree Court parking restrictions approved

The parking restrictions proposed for the junction of Mayfield Grove and Aintree Court were approved at a Decision Session of the Executive Member for Planning & Transport on 12th May.

The printed decision sheet from the meeting is available Here.

The move was prompted by concerns raised about the impact of parking on or near the junction by visitors to Railway Pond and problematic parking around school drop-off and pick-up times.

Ward Committee meeting on Thursday 28 April

The Dringhouses & Woodthorpe Ward Committee meets on Thursday 28 April at 7pm at the newly-refurbished St Edward the Confessor Community Hall.

The meeting is billed as an ‘Ideas Exchange’ to provide residents with an opportunity for informal group discussions on local priorities.

Ward councillors will also give an update on the ward budget for 2016/17, and there’ll be a chance to ask questions of Ann, Ashley and Stephen.

Yellow lines installed at Chaloners Road junction

Double yellow lines have been installed at the junction of Chaloners Road and Wains Road, to help keep the junction clear of inappropriate parking.

There had also been a proposal to put down double yellow lines at the junction of Mayfield Grove and Aintree Court. Late last year Cllr Stephen Fenton spoke with local residents about the proposal, and there were a mixtures of views – whilst many residents recognised the issues caused by vehicles parking near to – and sometimes on- the corners, there were some concerns about parking being displaced further into Aintree Court.

The proposals were advertised, and some objections were raised. This means that the matter will be considered at a public Executive Member for Transport and Planning Decision Meeting next month.

Action on flytipping and cycle path damage

Cllr Stephen Fenton is pressing Network Rail to take action to remove flytipping from its land at the end of North Lane, next to the railway line.

This was reported by Stephen and local residents some weeks ago. Network Rail have said that it has been ‘sent to the maintenance team’ but they can’t give a time estimate for it to be cleared.

Meanwhile in Woodthorpe, Stephen has asked for damage done to the markings on Lomond Ginnel to be repaired. It looks as though someone has hacked away at the paint markings at the junction with Girvan Close and Eden Close.
