Cycle track ‘missing link’ inches towards conclusion

On a recent visit to York College Ann, Stephen and Ashley raised the issue of the ‘missing link’ in the cycle track that will connect Tadcaster Road with the Green Lane.

The link currently comes to an abrupt halt at the bottom end of the Revival development, on the old College site.

  Environmental consultants have been commissioned to survey the area where a path would potentially go, as the area is an established newt habitat.  The outcome of the survey will determine which alignment the path will take and what time of year would be best for the construction to cause minimum disturbance to the wildlife.

Once there is clarity on the wildlife issues and best route, it should be possible to proceed with construction as the funding has already been secured.

The College has also confirmed that it expects the building work currently taking place on site to be completed in August.

It looks like Tadcaster Road will be very congested at teatime.

St Helen’s Road is still closed although now relatively free of surface water following the burst main earlier today. Workers are still digging their way down to the source of the problem. There is access for pedestrians and cyclists (who will need to dismount next to the roadworks)

It is race day so several hundred vehicles will be leaving the Knavesmire at tea time.

Those who can are advised to avoid driving down Tadcaster Road.

The number 4 bus route diversion remains in place.

Council owns over 110,000 square metres of unused land

New figures obtained under Freedom of Information legislation suggest that the York Council has been slow to exploit the full potential of the  “brownfield” derelict land that it owns.

The list includes the former park and ride car park on Tadcaster Road which current houses a little used pay and display car park.

Residents had already highlighted the vacant plot to the rear of the Acomb Library which has originally been intend to house a replacement Acomb Council office together with some much needed affordable homes. The project was dropped by the new Labour Council in 2011 and the site has remained derelict ever since.

Now officials have suggested that the project may be revived although there have been absolutely no consultation on any proposals.

Most  of the vacant land is at the former Lowfields and Manor school sites. The Council has also courted unpopularity at Lowfields by refusing to keep local residents up to date on its development plans.

Also on the list is Oliver House which has been empty for over 2 years and for which offers of over £3 million have been received.

The Labour Council leadership decided to delay its sale until after the elections.

In total the Council owns 110,877 square metres of unused land.

Release of some of the land would go some way towards reducing housing pressures in the City while helping those who are campaigning to preserve the City’s Green Belt.

York College to take redundant Moor Lane car parking spaces

The Moor Lane Car Park (former Park & Ride site next to Tesco) is now a pay and display car park with 500 spaces run by the York Council.

With the larger and free park and ride site nearby, not surprisingly the car park is little used.

The Council has been approached by the Principal at York College to help facilitate their parking arrangements during the summer period while building works are undertaken on site.

Council officials have agreed that 50 spaces will be provided at a flat rate of £2 per day for use by York College during the period 7 July to 31 August 2014.

A review will take place at the end of this period.
